I believe future historians of this era of online discourse will realize the tragic mistake we made was allowing a bunch of people with border line personality disorder and characteristic black-and-white thinking be in charge of the discourse.

IMO a lot of the black and white thinking is due to disinformation campaigns. Large amounts of uncertainty leads to bizarre behaviour, similar to what researchers found in the Market for Lemons https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Market_for_Lemons …

See, if you go look at most major disinformation that worked it happened *after* a major social trauma. I think disinformation is constant, and mostly ignored until the general population has experienced trauma. This combined with new communication medium and TADA! Fascism.
