Spent the day working on my outdoor painting recording rig. I went from a whole pelican flight case down to this one box and one smaller Olympus E-M1 mk3 camera. The innocations in sound and camera quality jumped drastically. Here’s a rundown of the gear:pic.twitter.com/P7cLnJdVLO

The Olympus E-M1 mk3 is the replacement for the camera I dropped in NYY. It has the same features, but 40% smaller, longer battery, and 2x the CPU with less power used. I put a tiny 14-42mm zoom on it and done. That’s the whole video and reference photo camera.pic.twitter.com/tMCOPYQ5A0

Next is my two DJI Osmo Pockets, but now with a slimmer protection cover, solid metal mounting bases, and a sun shade that looks like a nun’s hat. In the hot locations these cameras would overheat so the shade really help. They also fell off the crap bases DJI made.pic.twitter.com/MR0yJ9vvIA

These three cameras handle the bulk of the filming: 1. Interview while painting. 2. Location filming. 3. Painting progress. 4. 2nd interview. All fully stabilized and 4k video ready to go. Even filming in log color format for better color grading later.

Next is probably the GREATEST innovation in location sound recorsing ever: The RODE Wireless Go. I have tried every portable and wireless sound recording thing there is and *this* and INSANE how good it is. Zero latency high quality and very tiny wireless audio.pic.twitter.com/MxiLbTEru4

The latency is so low and the quality is so good that you can use them as wireless *monitors* too. There’s no perceptible lag as long as you’re line of sight. Has a built-in mic that’s great, or plug in a lapel mic.pic.twitter.com/Ujtn3DCoMF

This is just usb-c cables, mic cable, and two clip on windscreems for the go. That’s one of the great features of the Go. The windscreen snaps on over the mic so you don’t need to carry a giant extra one around. Just clip it on your shirt and go.pic.twitter.com/oTQCcO1uFW

Next is the two lapel mics I can use. Left is a cheapo $30 unidirectional mic off amazon. Right is a $99 rode cardioid lav mic I’ve had lying in a box for years. Why 3 mics?pic.twitter.com/1rsNkhKnom

The built-in mic (shown here) is really good, and I could probably use it to record podcasts and screencasts while traveling if I have a quiet room. However, it is very omnidirectional so if I’m in a noisy setting outside it picks up everything all around too.pic.twitter.com/tr6mWqeGVe

The RODE lav mic is much less omnidirectional and very high quality, so it’d work in a moderate outside setting and probably would be my main lapel mic. It still picks up ambient noise but not as much as the built-in mic, so not good for crazy loud locations.pic.twitter.com/ivRZwrn7dc

Now this unidirectional mic isn’t as high quality but WOW does it cut out all noise except my voice. I recorded near active construction sites and it cut out 90-99% of the noise. I just have to put it right under my chin to get it aimed right and it’s good.pic.twitter.com/0532izucdf

With those three tiny mics I can really record in nearly any setting and situation. 2019 I stupidly brought like 4 mics, big shotguns, headworn, belt clips, you name it and all just mediocre results. The little Wireless Go and 2 lapel mica is a revolution for my recording.

Then I have some monitor headphones I really like. I’ve had these for a while, and they’re just good quality for the price and reproduce a good aound range but are relatively hidden in my ears if I need to monitor while filming or just check my sound.pic.twitter.com/baP2yfqJui

Last thing is a cheap $9 TRS splitter because the Wireless Go is a standard mono signal so you can run this to your camera’s stereo input and then add a second mic. In my case I might use the uni lapel mic for my talking, and then the RODE lapel for the environmental sound.pic.twitter.com/kBvi7fRx9M

The *only* thing I’m missing from this setup is a tiny action cam for recorsing my paint mixing. I have a Polaroid Cube but it’s $20 and definitely worth $20. A GoPro is just too big but it’ll be my first thing to try. I ordered a tiny FPB cam that RC racers use next.

The reason for a “mixing cam” is when you paint about 50% of the action is down on the palette where you mix the paint. Without it there’s just whole minutes of dead air of a half finishe painting. Throw in mixing and you’ve got almost constant action.

Lastly, I was previously using a whole camera to film the scene. This turned out to be stupid because the scene didn’t really change but I’d have 2-3hours of footage of the same damn spot when I could just film for 20 minutes and splice in that. That cuts out one camera.

So now instead of wasting a camera on the scene I use the camera to film myself talking since watching me make faces and cuss while I’m painting is a good part of the show.

Now my setup is: 1. DJI Osmo for the painting. 2. Olympus for 20 minutes while I setup for the scene. 3. Olympus then for interview. 4. Tiny action cam or GoPro for the mixing. 5. Wireless Go split on the Olympus for audio. 6. Unidir lapel on me. 7. RODE lapel on splitter.
