Dear #believeinfilm -ers, is there any point in digitizing negatives with something like a Sony NEX-5 and an old macro lens or would I need some better digital camera for it to be viable? Desperately looking for some budget-friendly home scanning solution.
This will end up giving you *way* better scans than if you used a flatbed, and let you control everything about the final image since you're using a digital camera and can look through the back panel. Get it fine tuned and you can crank through tons of photos pretty quick.

After that, watch a couple youtube tutorials on how to process the digital images on your computer to reverse the negative. Total cost is like $15-$100 depending on how crazy you go and if you already have a tripod that works.
