I have been inching closer to giving Linux a try as my desktop environment, but the Windows Subsystem for Linux is a surprisingly good stopgap when I have a need for it.
Whatever you do avoid anything but LTS versions of Ubuntu. They have this idiotic upgrade policy where you can’t upgrade interim versions so you get stuck when they just cut you off.

Not going to get into the "you should try X distro" game, but +1: Ubuntu in general has not gone well for me over the years, so I stopped. The thing you described is an example of a wider problem with what gets upgraded, policy blahblahblah.
