I have been inching closer to giving Linux a try as my desktop environment, but the Windows Subsystem for Linux is a surprisingly good stopgap when I have a need for it.

Not going to get into the "you should try X distro" game, but +1: Ubuntu in general has not gone well for me over the years, so I stopped. The thing you described is an example of a wider problem with what gets upgraded, policy blahblahblah.
