Respect for authority makes you a terrible judge of character. Because the people delegating authority are even worse judges of character and have vested interests to protect. Discern character and authority is automatically suspicious since authoritarianism is evil.
Remember when Guido got on that podcast and declared http://web.py junk and Django the best and drove http://web.py into the ground and forbade all "magic" for 20 years because people would go "Guido hates magic"? Totally not authoritarian though.
