Do the first 2-3 layers with light gel, then switch to fine detail to finish it. Then you can paint layers forever.
I switched to rosemary a few years ago. 
Easily the best bang for the buck. I have a bucket full of them and just bought some more. I do however want a brand of "trash brushes" that are purposefully wrecked brushes in weird ways.
