Designer Question: See how the colors go from dark to light in each row? What do you (or designers in general) call that?
So in the painting world we have this concept, "Value is king, color is just an bonus." When you first learn painting you learn to draw in values first. You have to get your values right for it to make any sense. All discussions of contrast, chroma, and color all come from it.

I learned this emphasis on value first as "value does the work, colour gets the credit."

That's another saying I've heard too. It really is constant, and hammered in as the most important part of developing a painting. It makes sense. If you can't see color you can still see. If you can't see value you just see a mess of color and are basically blind.
