is the more impressionistic one (left) the first layer or the color study?
Alright @amyhoy here is the color study, and first layer I did today. This first layer has to dry then I do more until I'm done. The color study is a 6x8 on oil paper to study the photo, then the large one is 12x18 and done more accurately from the photo.pic.twitter.com/BB190fDPuW

Leonardo Davinci (maybe) invented that style called "sfumato", or "smokey" look. The idea is you keep most everything indefinite/out of focus until the very end when you make a few things crisp and in focus. It's kind of like slowly focusing the image as you go.
