Requested verification from Instagram and apparently I'm just not famous enough. They want "highly searched for" people to verify, but I'm guessing "searched for on instagram" so no way some old ass programmer who happens to paint is meeting that criteria. Oh well.

Instagram also outsources the determination of verifiability to incredibly low level employees, when really it should be a high level editorial choice. It's kind of like if a newspaper outsourced choosing what articles reach the front page to a call center in the Philipines.

I think the bait and switch of all platforms is they start off with no algorithm so everyone feels important to attract users, then once they have users they switch to a "curated" feed to attract advertisers and famous people.

But, overall I'm pretty happy with the tiny number of followers I have now on instagram. I have no illusions at all that my paintings of flowers should be even remotely as popular as any of the famous people on there. I'm sort of amazed I have that many even.
