Alright, after my epic 3 month trip around the world I'm still editing videos and it's a slog. I carted a whole movie studio of crap around and a full painting studio. Even though I made it small it was still a monster slog. When I got back I started working to slim down:

First up, I got a All Prima Pochade Blackfoot 8x10 box: https://allaprimapochade.com/collections/lite-pochade-box-versions/products/8-x-10-blackfoot-lite-pochade-box … I took the Yellowston 11x14 on the trip:

The yellowstone looks like this: https://allaprimapochade.com/collections/lite-pochade-box-versions/products/11-x-14-yellowstone-lite … It was awesome, but it was too much. It's not heavy but it is big, so putting that on a plane was murder. It's also 11x14 so every painting video was like 3 hours long. I want to make them smaller.

Next up I got a larger Mountainsmith lumbar pack: https://mountainsmith.com/tanack-10-camera-lumbar-pack.html … I didn't get the camera one, but the same size as that. My previous one was great but I packed it to the brim with camera and painting gear to the point it was uncomfortable.

Next up, I took about 12 gigantic tubes of Lukas professional oil paints and only used 1/3 of each tube for the whole three months. That's about 30-40 paintings at 11x14. They were also real oils so that meant taking a solvent of some kind and flying with them. Nightmare.

Looking back at past videos and paintings when I got home, I saw that some of the easiest and best paintings I did used the Daniel Smith Water Soluble paints with their quick dry safflower medium: http://danielsmith.com/category/wsoil/  I also only really used like 5-6 colors, not 12!

Next trip, just bringing a bag of 6 colors, two 35ml tubes each, and a giant tube of white Daniel Smith paints and done. I can get away with just 3 colors but that's not as fun. Now, weight when flying is a huge problem. Not just when carrying things around, so...

The new box is only about 3lbs, paints are fairly light too, maybe 2lbs, I think total gear is around 20lbs including all the little cameras and stuff. You know what really ruins your day on weight? Panels. You can't really take canvas on trips so you pack wood panels.

A stack of MDF 11x14 painting panels can push close to 20lbs. You can wrap them in construction plastic so you don't need a box, but it's still a lot of weight and space. Dropping down to an 8x10 size means I can take "feather light" panels, at 1/3rd the weight.

My recording setup worked alright, because I used these tiny DJI cameras and an old gopro, but I brought 2 each so I could use them without charging. Then I got 2 GoPro Max 360s on the trip (great camera!) PLUS I dragged a full Olympus pro camera plus 3 lenses.

Every time I fly with all this gear I end up having to check my damn bag with the gear. That meant I had to buy a Pelican carryon suitcase just for the cameras so I could check them. That added another heavy bag to cart around. 3 hour videos meant 2 cameras too. Screw that!

Next move is to cut down the camera weight. One DJI, one GoPro, one 360 max, and I got a Sony RX100 mark VII to replace the huge Olympus. I'll report on how well this works later. Hopefully the next trip I can take just one check luggage and a backpack and done.
