I finally managed to get nice big heavy strings 12-52mm on my G&L Doheny V12 guitar. It has a wound G, and I have to tune 1/2 step flat, and it took me 3 hours to balance the saddle height, tremolo tension, and neck truss rod. Works now but what a pain in the ass.
But, the trick is to block the trem with something the exact width so it's level. Then tune it and the block holds it straight. Once you've got it tuned, tighten the spring claw until the block just barely falls out. Finally, just turn the trem claw screws until it's in tune.

Seen that done with a roll of pennies wrapped in insulating tape! Used to use a credit card in the trem cavity of Floyd rose for a similar effect
