Finally landed in Japan and on the Narita Express train to Shinjuku. Everything is fairly straightforward EXCEPT they have this batshit crazy system where you can’t just buy a ticket for the express train. You have to buy a basic ticket, then add on a 2nd express ticket. WTF?

The basic ticket is the distance fare, you could use it to ride in the slowest local train if you want. The express ticket is for the right to ride a specific express train, possibly with a seat reservation.

I know. It’s still stupid as fuck and probably caused by software. I’ve traveled the whole entire world pretty much and this is the only place that does this, and explaining doesn’t make it logical.
