Watching Chernobyl and realized that the magnitude of the disaster and how humiliating it was to the USSR could have been the catalyst for the fall 5 years later. The cost to clean up was very high combined with a constant obvious demonstration of central planning’s failure.

The show is also an incredibly good depiction of hidden authoritarianism where people believe anyone in authority only because they’re in authority, but nobody thinks that’s authoritarian because they’re blinded by an ideology.
