As much as I hate to admit it, Facebook targeted ads work...I’ve (eventually) bought more than one thing b/c of them.

It's not hard for them to get under your skin if you participate. I'm guessing
@zedshaw doesn't click on many (any?) stories or shared links, because that's how most of these services profiled me. The only way to win the game is not to play.
I actually don't think advertising and trying to sell me something is bad. My issue with internet advertising is how low quality it is compared to the level of surveillance done, and how it's used as an infection vector for viruses.
