Starting another self-portrait with a hat on and with both my face and the canvas pointed at the mirror. Doing an accurate drawing this way is damn hard, but weirdly doing the painting with shapes is easy. Also I find using thinned ivory black works the best to see what I did.pic.twitter.com/0T8feVPsyK

Finished this self-portrait and went with a funky hat, red shirt, and head tilted at a slight angle over a shoulder. 11x14 and took 2 hours. You'll notice that the 2nd photo in the above tweet is flipped. That's kind of how I see it while I'm painting, and if I photograph it in the mirror that's what I see. The other two I viewed straight on which flips it. This is so weird when you're painting.
I'm finding though that--for whatever reason--this way of paintig a self-portrait is much easier. It's like I can see the differences and errors much better than the traditional way of mirror next to canvas. In fact, I wonder if there's some possible neurology study here.
It's very hard to describe, but it's like I don't have to do extra work to do the painting? I think with normal mirror orientation my brain is having to do some kind of ... rotation? Flip? But this way my brain doesn't work harder to see it.
Where my brain has to do extra work is in using the brush. Since it's reversed and I'm doing it over the left shoulder I'm basically painting behind me, so it takes a bit of translation to orient your motorskills backwards, but it's not too hard.
