Painting/color friends: I know that "tinting" a color is lightening it with white (and shading is darkening with black). Is it also ok to say "tint/shade with red" to mean mixing a color with red? Do "tint with red" and "shade with red" mean different things?

In particular, if "tinting with red", would that be lightening with red (that is, mixing red into your dark colors to brighten them)? Or would it still be mixing white & other light colors with red? ("Shading with red" being the opposite in either case, I assume.)

Hmm I've never heard that before but I'm not your typical painter.. @zedshaw and @KarenWhitworth would know more propper things

That would depend if your red is opaque or transparent. And if it is opaque, is it lighter than your base mix or darker than? An opaque red will shift the value of the mix it is introduced to lighter or darker. Alternatively, transparent red will darken the mix.
