Here is a random thought regarding SciFi and the implicit belief in videos as truth: Can you think of any scifi author the predicted Deep Fakes? As in, nobody trusts any videos or photos they see because video AI fakery is so prevalent as to make video useless?

So, this doesn’t mean those scifi mysteries where SURPRISE the video was faked to cover the killer! I mean, faked manipulated videos are everywhere and difficult to detect such that video stops being useful. In all scifi I’ve known video is absolutely true and trusted.

Iirc @cstross touched on that, and I'm sure that level of deceit turned up in some of @IainMBanksCult novels

The nemesis in Season 2 of Star Trek Discovery is pretty much a deep fake.

Interesting. I'm about to start that season so I'll see how that goes. However, a key point *everyone* misses: The premise I'm proposing isn't that video can be secretly manipulated. It's that *everyone* knows it can be, so it becomes untrusted. I'll explain:

IIRC Iain Banks' "The Player of Games" touched on this idea briefly. In the Culture, only videos recorded/verified by trusted AIs could be believed as any other video could be readily generated. In this case, it was brought up in the context of blackmail.

The general idea was that "yes, it will be plausible at some point and at an obscene cost and only for studios/companies with money, and will require specially shot material". The transition of mistrust from "photoshopped image" to "deepfake video" was only a function of time

Right but even in that everyone is watching the video and trusts it, and the fakery is limited and secret tech. That’s very different from a world where video is totally untrustworthy and avoided.

Authors certainly but even in film "The Running Man" had a whole sequence based around face remapping in a public broadcast. I would say nobody thought it was _that_ close, primarily people in the field of expensive image manip. and VFX
