I think the best way to learn stats is to get obsessed with a particular field that uses stats a lot. My gateway was getting pretty serious into baseball stats for a number of years, polished it out with an undergrad textbook later.

Yes and no. You need some high-octane fuel to get you started and obsession is good for that. But you still need good material. I wanted to „talk to computers“ since I was ten, but it took Zed‘s book ~10 years later for me to actually learn it, even though I tried loads of others
