Anyone telling you that is using a subtle form of gaslighting to manipulate you into believing what they believe, not into being more interesting. They also tend to be narcissists who have no real interest in you, and therefore don't know enough about you to make that judgement.

That's why this "advice" is so cruel. It assumes that the context, location, or culture doesn't matter. That the person with a boring personality is the problem, which is weird because these people LOVE to talk about "micro-aggressions" and how culture shapes every damn thing.
But, change the context and suddenly the exact same behavior is seen as a positive thing. You give me some bad personality trait people hate and I'll find you 10 artists and musicians doing the same exact thing and getting away with it, or a country where that's totally normal.
