Would you say there is such a thing as fine art illustration? As in, art sold in traditional galleries, but tells a story and/or has illustrative qualities?

I took a class in “narative art” and that’s basically what it is. Look at paintings with the word “allegory” in the title, like https://www.google.com/amp/s/eclecticlight.co/2018/07/12/too-real-the-narrative-paintings-of-jean-leon-gerome-2/amp/ … by Gerome. He did a lot of it.

I have been thinking about paintings like these and how they tell stories, but all I seem to hear about my own work is: "you should illustrate children's books" and I honestly don't think it's for me. I barely have enough time to paint as it is

Then there's people like Carl Dobsky who runs a school in LA and does modern narrative paintings: https://hifructose.com/2018/01/10/carl-dobskys-realistic-narratives-contain-flashes-of-magic/ … And also Felicita Norris: https://felicitanorris.com/home.html Who does a different style with the same idea of narrative.

Awesome! I'll check out these links when I get a chance! I think I'm more or less trying to find my place in the art world haha

Just use oil paint and call it fine art. Throw a few NSFW and stick some garbage on it and call it contemporary art.
