Would you say there is such a thing as fine art illustration? As in, art sold in traditional galleries, but tells a story and/or has illustrative qualities?

I have been thinking about paintings like these and how they tell stories, but all I seem to hear about my own work is: "you should illustrate children's books" and I honestly don't think it's for me. I barely have enough time to paint as it is
For example, my favorite is this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Truth_Coming_Out_of_Her_Well … It's a woman coming out of a well, BUT it is thought it's the first painting Gerome did using photography and cameras, so demonstrating the new level of "truth" you can get from it, giving it two meanings.
