I follow this painter on instagram named Jullian Merrow Smith: https://shiftinglight.com/  He does these great still life studies of one fruit with great lighting. I never could pull off that lighting, then I saw 1 single second in a promotional video where he does this:pic.twitter.com/WOU3vhcZM1

A fucking box? Why the hell didn't I think to create a light trap with a cardboard box? It's the first time I've ever seen someone do that, and I took classes from some of the greatest still life painters working today, and every video, and *nobody* came up with this.

Did you ever see my palette knife? It has a hole. I've patented it. Can you figure out what the hole is for?pic.twitter.com/BHVY6QMXFk

Ha! I love that you patented it. Guesses: hang it on a hook? Help stop paint from running down to the handle? I’m totally stumped.

You mix your paint for a color. Paint is on the knife right? Look at your subject through the hole so you can see the subject and paint. If you can't see the hole, then you matched the paint to the subject. It let's me do *dead* accurate color matching fast.

OMG that is so obvious and amazing. I do that all the time, but with the edge of the knife, but the light from the non-knife edge screws with me. Fantastic. I’m going to drill some holes in my knives now.

A drill almost works but go very slow and then you need to use a file to get the burrs off the edge. A better option is one of these: https://www.amazon.com/Neiko-02612A-Multi-Purpose-Power-Punch/dp/B0002T87CW/ … You can find a cheaper metal rivet puncher than that, but turns out to be really useful tool to have.
