You know if that Arkansas senator decided to cut teacher's pay if they don't improve reading we'd have a never ending stream of strikes and teacher's union PR trying to get this guy fired. But, punish some poor kids for the documented failing of teachers and..silence.
And if you read that and think I'm a conservative because I hate teacher's unions then you have two problems: 1. You believe that anyone criticizing any union is "the enemy". 2. An "us vs. them" mentality makes you a fucking fascist not a progressive.
I honestly think we need to ban whole language reading entirely. It's been debunked repeatedly, no science supports it at all, a learning to read is so essential to continued success that I can't see why it hasn't been banned. Shit, we ban plastic straws.
It is not the teachers fault, it's how they are being taught to teach. The programs they go through are not designed by real teachers or scientists, but by state level political agendas. Just take the existence of creationism for example. Your beef is with politicians and admins.
