I think he only had use of a few fingers due to burns from a fire, so had to learn a new technique to accommodate
Yes, that's true. I believe it was a fire in his trailer. Isn't amazing that he just kept playing and figured it out?

Absolutely. In photos his middle finger always looks really flat I wonder if he used bits of that finger other than his fingertip to fret notes

When he did chords he'd use the damaged fingers, but in soloing just the two. It's quite amazing how he figured it all out.
