I think he only had use of a few fingers due to burns from a fire, so had to learn a new technique to accommodate

Yes, that's true. I believe it was a fire in his trailer. Isn't amazing that he just kept playing and figured it out?

It always amazed me how many times i've been told that my way of fretting is "wrong". This is why new musicians get frustrated. Works the same in systems development too :)

Yep. I had a guitar teacher who totally broke my left hand with his bizarre ass edicts of form and "improved scales". Took me a couple years to rebuild it and a large part of that came from watching Django play.

Agreed. Everybody has different hands which may encourage modified techniques. People chirp how about how a thumb on the E string is bad style and prevents playing certain fingerings. But it unlocks otherwise impossible fingerings too.
