In my latest (and also my first in the !) I write about the insidious methods Orban and Vucic are using to co-opt the media & boost support through amplifying loyal outlets 👇👇

More clarity is definitely welcome but this also looks like an admission of politicization. Which is not necessarily a bad thing, as long as it's coupled with transparent & objective criteria

President Duda has indicated he would be willing to sign a law introducing same-sex civil partnerships. But critics claim it is a cynical attempt to win over moderate voters ahead of this year's presidential elections

Great work from et al. This is a textbook case of 'trans-sovereign' nationalism — 's government is trying to reproduce the nation across its borders w/ 🇷🇴,🇸🇰,🇸🇮,🇷🇸. Of course, the government has a specific idea of what the Hungarian nation looks & acts like.

And finally, while there is only a tiny community of in , the third article in the series is worth reading too. It shows a small microcosm of the authoritarian, patronage-building tactics of the government. x/

Even though, in both countries, ethnic minorities and their politicians are working against their very own interests when they embrace the government’s antiliberal politics. If anything, they should know what it feels like to be the other. 8/

The party’s dependence has only become bigger since, Fidesz has successfully built up a patronage network in too. This, like in , explains the 90+ percent vote share that Fidesz gets during elections. 7/

It could certainly be. Orban’s tentacles are in the Balkans, too. In , the local ethnic leader reached out to Fidesz before 2010, taking VMSZ in a more authoritarian direction. 6/

The largest sums of money have been sent to Transylvania to renovate churches, build sports complexes, but also to take over media and turn them into supporters. This is how you build a patronage network. 4/

And two, these stories also reflect on the difficulties of doing ethnic politics. If allying with the local majority doesn’t work or doesn’t pay off, your only hope is the “home abroad.” That makes you dependent on your new patron. 3/

Before delving into the stories, two caveats. One, this outreach is often happening with the implicit or, in some cases, tacit approval of the ruling elites in each country. Minorities are a burden—best out of mind, out of sight. 2/

I hope people will stop saying the EU needs to worry about public backlash if it stands up to the autocrats in Poland and defends rule of law. Quite the opposite is true
