This and Faire are the Amazon killers
-
Shopify (along with others like Faire, Returnly, Passport, Lumi, Shippo et al) is everyone's hope in retail building anti-Amazon alliance the way Instacart is in grocery for the big grocery chains

Is the fulfillment network actual new warehouses + delivery or partnering with existing ones and adding a Shopify layer on top?

Most 3PL fulfilment houses are already hooked into the Shopify API, and there are a bunch of 3PL's that are *VERY* good at what they do (no micro-management needed). I think it's much less of a transition into atoms than you'd expect.
-
As an ecomm startup you have to find a 3PL that: 1. Will take you on with no/low order volume 2. Has great quality/consistency 3. That can scale up 100x as you do 4. Won't F you to serve bigger clients during holidays Almost impossible to get all 4. But this should do just that.
-
It's almost a network aggregation play, with some clever software routing on top. Shopify has the leverage to demand top tier service and pricing with their power/scale, even if the person actually getting that great service and pricing is a tiny brand shipping 100 orders/month.

Agreed, and as payments and identity starts to improve as a UX across the web, a lot of what Amazon was able to glue together monolithically could start to break back apart into focused layers and slices that are able to work together more efficiently.
-
As
@rabois pointed out earlier today; the long tail of retail is looking pretty healthy right now.

Going to be hard for them to get rich on fulfillment when their competition like amazon doesn’t mind doing fulfillment at scale at break even pricing
