Maybe we should do lossy executable compression next! That's a totally untapped niche and really, how important can it possibly be to get these instruction bytes exactly right?

If you got the bytes wrong this just means you were unlucky; can always download an uncompressed executable.

I think you could probably just drop 4MB out of most apps on the floor entirely and then put in a stub that downloads them along with the 25+MB update package that is the first thing they download on first launch, before you even see any UI, anyway.

I always love when I download a 100+ MB app package that then proceeds to download a 70MB update package on first launch leaving me to wonder "how much of the first 100MB did you just replace?"

None! Initial 100MB is just Electron, so that it can show the progress bar while downloading.

Which makes me think… a lossy executable compressor that replaces Electron with an equivalent native UI.

Here's an idea: what if you installed only one Electron runtime in a shared location? You could even bundle it with a frontend that can display web pages.
