firis staff progress. half of rod assembled and primed. still needs more sanding. churned out a bunch of mini-crystals for test finishing to see what approaches work best. they're actually translucent, despite appearances. main body section prototyped.pic.twitter.com/HdV0ZSyPWE

i used an alternative approach for the rod section here that i've never used before. the problem is that it's far too thin for my standard method: 0.75" OD, 0.5" ID 6061 aluminum tube. and of course, i still need it to unscrew for transport and not break in half under con abuse.

so what i did is I printed all the sections of the staff with threads in them. the top half (the wider half) is threaded for 5/16"-18. the bottom half is threaded for 5/16"-18 at the top, and 8-32 on the rest.pic.twitter.com/DUlbZQbFYC

in the top part, i threaded in a 5/16"-18 nylon threaded rod. in the bottom, i'm going to assemble them with an 8-32 aluminum threaded rod. the nylon threaded rod doubles as the connector to attach everything together: bottom rod //// top rod //// staff head

How do con security feel about props that have metal in them, is it mostly a problem when the whole thing is made out of metal?

except for CRX (which had wildly inconsistent policies and was banning even plastic on some days), i've never had an issue. using metal for internal structures is generally fine; the rule is usually phrased as "no live steel".

which specifically means that you cannot have exposed metal edges. you can even have exposed metal so long as there is no significant exposed edge that could be dangerous (sharp or blunt).

this means for example that even a blunt metal sword is not acceptable. but also, typically, a sharp plastic sword is not acceptable either.
