    Proposal for a new metric: The Moon Unit, or "moo", which is equal to 2.71321035034 seconds, the maximum ping time to the moon. It's a measure for web technologies, like Google Drive, which regularly takes around 4.5moo to list the first 50 files in a directory.

    This is a terrible take. It totally misses the key point: handles >10k submissions and >25m downloads per month at a cost of only $1.3m /year. spends $193m (!) on publications, and spends $33.7m. Something stinks.

    If I read this correctly, one of the richest universities in the world has bribed Elsevier to make their own papers Open Access. That’s good for CMU and good for Elsevier. It’s hard for me to see how this is actually good for science.

    For those who didn't know Jon's work, he was one of the key engines behind 's Sonar internet-scanning project, and also one of the brains responsible for the Open Data project. He was also a brilliant contributor and a staunch community innovator and friend.

    Jon was one of the smartest, humblest, most heartbreakingly sincere people I’ve ever met. The hole he leaves in the security community and the world is immeasurable.

    Last night I got news of the loss of 😢 I never got to meet Jon in person, but I had many interactions with him over the tubes, and he was clearly a super nice dude and very smart. , and the community lost a good one. We'll miss you Jon.
