[state, dispatch] = useReducer() Is it too late to have everybody call the object you pass to dispatch "event" instead of "action"? dispatch(event) dispatch(action) Probably not. A boy can dream.

✍️ I wrote half of a post on , explaining how most of the code we write uses state machines (whether implicit or explicit) and how Redux is half of that pattern:

This pattern: test('whatever', () => { const foo = someThing() // use foo }) makes for a WAY simpler testbase than: let foo beforeEach(() => { foo = someThing() }) test('whatever', () => { // use foo }) Avoid mutable variables. Your tests will be easier to understand

ok so - I took dan's classes/hooks code from react conf, blacked out the 'unnecessary' bits, then colour coded bits by 'concern'. so much nicer. the effect is amplified in more complex components, where concerns are split and mixed across lifecycle methods.

a snippet of code using react classes to manage state for a component. about 20% is blacked out, while the colored patches are spread across lifecycles and members.
the same snippet as before, but with hooks in a function. no incidental code, and the code is grouped by functional concern rather than lifecycle.

As exciting as these infrastructure projects are, I'm still looking forward to the day where it's all hidden from me, like the machine code generated by my compiler.
