Call-Back Economic Indicator: Randomly contact 100 SMBs/month and tell them you want to buy what they're selling. Measure how long it takes them to follow up, or if they follow up at all. Tracked over time, this would be a fantastic indicator of the economy.
Seems like it might be more of an indicator of the health of each business. I’ve found that responsiveness is positively correlated with success - both at a company and an individual level.

On average, I've found the better the economy, the less hungry small businesses become. Recently tried to get some work done on my house and merely getting someone to call us back was a victory. If they showed up on time to bid the work, it was a miracle.

This is an unpopular thing to say but I think it’s indicative of US business in general. I tried making products in the US for years. Had to go to Taiwan because I couldn’t get basic level of responsiveness from machine shops. Responsiveness is a competitive advantage today.
