Most local ‘historic’ preservation is a tragic, permanent necrosis in an otherwise healthy organism. But the root cause isn’t evil - it’s the ongoing existence of historic preservation boards, which naturally fill their time finding more and more buildings to mark as historic.

So true. In my neighborhood, the restrictions on what you can do to a historic house make it so most are just left vacant and boarded up.
