When you replace ‘neighborhood character’ with ‘the way I like it to look,’ the housing debate makes a lot more sense.

It's trivially true, in the sense that, assuming you have the economic means to pick which neighborhood you live in, you probably pick the one whose character is the way you like it. Changing it after you arrive feels unfair. Maybe not quite "bait and switch" but close.

The problem seems to be that when people buy property, they assume it comes with an implicit contract that nothing around it will materially change.
