You can reliably access higher-level thinking by putting yourself in a work context/mindset while simultaneously removing the ability to do work. Reading is just one of many ways to do it. I didn't realize this until a few years ago. As children we always read it beginning to end, and completion is the goal. Now I read 3-4 related books at a time, pacing myself through each and thinking about how the content applies to me. It's a fantastic way to read non-fiction
