People don’t get antidepressants to go from 8 to 9. They get them to go from 4 to 5 (on a 0-10 happiness scale).

or, maybe a 5 to 6. Or a 7 to 8. Or a 4 to 6. Or a 5 to 8. Without research, it's hard to definitively say - and happiness is not easy to measure.

Agreed. I guess my real question is whether or not 25% of people in other cultures (past and present) were/are depressed enough to take medication for it. Is it human to be depressed, or is it American to be depressed? Seems worth knowing.

(My guess is both, but I don't know.)

People appear to have different default happiness rates (set points). Not everyone has the privilege of having a happy set point. Also "unhappy" is by definition relative to other people — there will always be a left tail end of the bell curve! Relevant: http://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1111/j.1467-8721.2007.00479.x …

With this framing it could seem *irresponsible* to not put that chunk of negative-set-point people on antidepressants!
