Have been thinking about this recently, as I launched a new Amazon product. Incumbants in the niche with 1,000+ reviews. Ideally, the best product would win, but often consumers want to make a quick buying decision, and thus a valid heuristic is to compare those with most reviews

Thus your idea about reviews being flushed each year is a good one. Perhaps it can be improved on, but its a good start.

They might learn from
