It’s crazy how the falsehood “Facebook sells your data” is a nearly universally-accepted truth amongst smart, otherwise-rigorous non-tech people.

Letting people buy ads anytime they want that target you with your data, is selling your data, imho.
Seems different to me since they don’t receive your name or any personally-identifying info. They can only target groups in aggregate.

Agree. It's a sensationalist statement that media is using for exactly that purpose because it is not entirely wrong, but also not really accurate.
