I'm in favor of historic preservation laws, but think local governments should create an endowment to buy/maintain historic sites with a reasonable process for re-assessing what's historic, moving items to a museum or documenting thoroughly before rebuilding, etc.

The system is too abusable right now. I also thinking zoning laws should be studied and re-examined... they cover an important domain for city development but many were formulated speculatively at a lower level of societal knowledge and have persisted just through inertia.

Slowing development down doesn’t sound like a bad idea to me. In fact maybe we need to do more of it, not less. By any means necessary.
