I have to imagine that one of the hardest businesses to start and run well is a 3PL for small businesses and startups. Easy to force compliance/standardization with software, impossible w physical products - goods show up and very costly to reject.

Yep. Charging people helps offset the cost but you still have to clean up the mess at scale.

Amazon has solved it by firing customers or vendors that non-conform too often. Nice to have lots of leverage.
