I think it’s less about risk and more about return. Buying Amazon is like investing in a basket of startups, but with higher probability of success compared to the startups that most angels would have access to.

That’s assuming that the average person would have access to - and then do a good job picking - winners amongst very early stage startups. Would be surprised if the average angel investor returned 4x, which is possible w Amazon.
