I expect to see a lot more of this...EDI as a whole is unbelievably unsecure.

Isn't EDI just a plain-text document format, wherein security should be in applications that should send/receive these files encrypted and transmit over secure connections? Or is there something else about EDI making it inherently insecure?

Yep. It’s an indictment of the messaging systems. And fun / colorful descriptions of how things could go wrong
