Setting up a Windows VM and everything about it (the process and the result) is worse than I ever imagined.

Really? I've used a Windows VM for daily dev since 2010. XP, then 7 mostly. What virtualization platform?
Windows 7 with VMWare. Everything from getting a copy of Windows to successfully updating is a nightmare.

more reading here: http://superuser.com/questions/951960/windows-7-sp1-windows-update-stuck-checking-for-updates …. None of the fixes worked, trying WSUS offline updater now.

Huh, I use an MSDN license key, bridged networking and virtualbox. Only real complaint is my clipboard sometimes goes missing.
