I got halfway through this opinion piece before it occurred to me that it might not be an opinion piece (it isn’t). Even with very low expectations, the language used by the paper of record continues to astonish me.https://www.nytimes.com/2019/11/29/nyregion/real-estate-industry-nyc.html …

I think it’s a combination of landlords / developers being blamed for things that aren’t their fault and a small number of bad actors giving a bad impression. Like Chinese investors or lack of supply, that really isn’t developers’ or landlords’ fault.

The number of people who would move to NYC if they could, like Southern California, is effectively infinite. You can’t build your way out of this affordability problem. But developers and landlords will take the blame for high prices.

The people of SF like their views and don't see any reason to compromise that.

i agree with the first part of your sentence but not the second. you give way too much weight to NYT psych impact on the preferences of people in San Fran who have their own selfish reasons for being NIMBYs.

Isn’t it the consumers setting the agenda/demand rather than the suppliers (papers)?

I’ve always found pieces on New York in the times to be very “New York” focused, basically it’s a long a brunch section. Basically if you miss living there read the metro section.

San Fran's transportation system is literally destroying lives it is so bad. Not enough housing within the city. So instead create an urban sprawl nightmare. 5 lanea each way spending 3 hours to and from work. Its an engineering disaster.
