Two things cannot coexist for long without being symbiotic. College exists because a desire to continue to exist is in its DNA, but the same is true of humanity/society and if college didn't benefit us we would have killed it by now.

True, but to a mild extent. All it takes is for college to appear more attractive than the immediate alternatives (i.e. a local maxima). And college has very mild signalling properties, which is enough to sustain it.
