This is the brilliance of Bezos. Define the battleground, and outlast everyone else. It’s a war of attrition.

Whatever your take on Amazon, it seems ludicrous to have watched them play the painstaking long game in virtually every successful part of their business, but then hold them to the same quarter-by-quarter expectations of every other publicly traded company.

They're playing the game they're being dealt

Not everyone will have to build out their own FedEx/UPS competitor: As an aggregator, Amazon should opt for proprietary components (like Prime 1-day shipping)... It’s pretty bizarre to me why Amazon is anomaly in the market with regard to how it takes a long term approach by constantly reinvesting in itself. Almost more bizarre is how analysts routinely forget that “burning through money” = enabling offerings that are very hard to match

Will be interesting to see how this plays out vs. the rise in mini-fulfillment and on-demand warehousing. Amazon has the capital to own the warehouse economics, but others may soon be able to rent their way to competitiveness through other parties than FBA.
