The mental model is that wealth is malevolent, so every theory in the piece ascribes malevolence, or at least pathology, to the wealthy. To include “because they like making cool things?” would imply that wealth comes from making cool things — anathema to the article’s worldview.

As much as ‘building cool things’ will be what drives many such people to keep working, do not rule out some other are tied in a particular rat race or just lack the necessary imagination to do nothing with their time.
