The mental model is that wealth is malevolent, so every theory in the piece ascribes malevolence, or at least pathology, to the wealthy. To include “because they like making cool things?” would imply that wealth comes from making cool things — anathema to the article’s worldview.

In our 20s when Facebook IPOd, my buddies and I used to joke about what we'd do were we Zuck (we're about the same age). Lots of traveling, vacation homes, parting, etc. Then we'd realize that's exactly why we'll never have Zuck-level money.
