do you keep a commonplace book or use any sort of index card system?
No, I just underline and then put them back on the shelf, and pick them up later to look through the underlines, if I want to remind myself of what’s important.

Love this strategy. Almost as effective for retention as just burning the books after reading and inhaling the fumes

I will pay lots of money for a subscription service that transcribes my physical underlines and send me the books back intact.
