Wikipedia polices its content decently well. Snopes exists. Major news orgs have systems. They're not perfect, but it's a lot better than pretending a total incapacity to identify bullshit.
I think the disconnect here is that you believe Facebook could effectively moderate content in a good faith manner; advocating for moderation is then logical. But politicians are saying Facebook can’t be trusted and must be broken up - that isn’t compatible with FB moderating.

I was just complaining about your straw man. I think you're conflating two positions: 1) that FB has a bad policy in allowing provable lies, and 2) that legislative action should break up FB. These two aren't logically inconsistent.

Yes! A friend is dealing with that on Facebook. It's very easy to report someone for something and get them blocked on Facebook. Very difficult to then prove your innocence. Likely only those with resources will be able to u fetter their speech.
